What is Sugaring Hair Removal?

There are many methods of hair removal; each of them has its benefits and best-use cases. When it comes to the bikini area, you likely want the most effective method of hair removal that is safe for that sensitive area and is the least painful. Sugaring may be the perfect solution.

Sugaring is not only less painful than waxing, but it's also a more natural and environmentally friendly hair-removal method than wax.

What is body sugaring?

Body sugaring is a hair-removal process that involves using a natural paste to remove hair from the root in a less abrasive way than other methods. It's a medieval process of hair removal that has recently revived itself.

Sugaring paste is a mixture of sugar, lemon, and water heated together to form a candy-like consistency. While the ingredients are simple, getting the combination right on your own is quite challenging.

The paste wraps around the hair follicle and removes the hair from the root. Because of this, it grows back thinner over time. We recommend that a trained and licensed aesthetician completes your first sugaring process.

What are the benefits of sugaring?

Unlike waxing, it doesn't pull at the skin and pulls the hair from the root rather than cutting it off at the skin. Removing the root helps the hair grow back slower and less thick and makes it the ideal hair-removal method for ingrown hairs and curly hair.

Results typically last 3 to 5 weeks, depending on the body area and the speed with which your hair naturally grows. Unlike other hair-removal methods, you can sugar pretty much any area of the body, including the sensitive bikini area, legs, eyebrows, upper lip, arms, back, etc. It's great for larger areas like legs and back because it can be applied to a large area at a time, making the process faster than with other methods.

Many people also note that it is less painful than waxing and cheaper than laser hair removal.

How Does Sugaring Work? Before and After Care

Before sugaring, you should allow the hair to grow out for four weeks and exfoliate consistently.

Sugaring begins with cleansing the area of hair removal. Then a powder is applied to the skin to keep the skin dry as some people sweat during the process, and the sugar will not adhere to the skin if it is moist.

Once you prep the area, apply the sugaring paste to the skin against the hair growth – it needs to be moulded while slightly warm.

Then, remove the paste in the same direction as the hair growth. That's it for the sugaring process, but there is some vital aftercare to finish the process.

Immediately after treatment, ensure to wear loose clothing to let the skin breathe. Do not work out, have intercourse, or sit in a hot tub or sauna 48 hours after treatment, especially for bikini-area treatments, as the skin will be more sensitive and prone to bacteria.

After 48 hours, exfoliate and moisturize every day with My Vikini Three-Step System. Treat ingrown hairs with ingrown hair serum (included in the 3 step system); do not pick at them.

Ready for Smooth Hair-Free Skin?

Book your first sugaring appointment for four weeks from now, so you have time to allow your hair to grow out for the treatment and use the My Vikini Three-Step System for aftercare. Note that it can also be helpful to book your appointment the week after your next menstrual cycle, as this is when you are least sensitive.

To prepare for your treatment, we also recommend exfoliating your skin regularly. If you're worried about pain during the treatment, avoid consuming caffeine or alcohol before the appointment and take a pain reliever 30 minutes before.

How to Find a Reputable Salon

To have the best sugaring experience, you want to see a licensed aesthetician at a reputable salon. So, it's important to do your research. Here are some things to pay attention to:

  • Read reviews; this can tell you about the salon's practices.
  • Ensure they're using safe and sanitary practices, such as wearing gloves.
  • Reputable salons will generally require new customers to fill out a questionnaire before the appointment to ensure they're not taking any contraindicated medications or have a medical history that could result in complications.
